Protecting What You Value Most

Surviving a custody evaluation

by | May 27, 2021 |

Custody evaluations can be a nerve-wracking process. Even though you have nothing to hide, it seems as if everyone is accusing you of something. You may feel that your very parenting is being brought into question.

Although this is not true, it is still a very stressful event. The evaluator’s job is to determine what is best for your child.

Understand your evaluator

Remember, your evaluator is not your friend. They are there to determine what is best for your child. They are on your child’s side and want what is best for your son or daughter.

Be prepared

Come prepared for your evaluation. Be courteous by arriving a bit early and with a list of questions you have for the evaluator. This will help you focus.

Stick to the welfare of your child

This is not the time or the place to go over your exes failings. Remember, this is not about your spouse or your marriage. It is about the welfare of your son or daughter.

Be honest

Honesty is always the best policy. Evaluators train for years to pick up on microexpressions and false behaviors. It is better, to be honest about something than avoid it or hedge around it.

Cooperate

Always answer questions to the best of your ability and do whatever the evaluator asks you to before your next meeting. Being uncooperative will just hurt your chances.

Custody evaluations are not nearly as bad as they seem. Just remember to be yourself as well as open and honest. If you have questions about your custody evaluation and hearing, call Travers & Travers Family Law at 281-492-2166 or contact us on the web.
