Why are older couples divorcing more often?

Divorce is more common than ever in the United States. What was once taboo, nearly half of all marriages now end in divorce. There is one group whose divorce rate has doubled over the last 30 years and that is the Baby Boomers generation.

1-in-4 divorces a decade ago involved a couple over 50 years old. Research shows that the greatest determinant of a marriage’s longevity isn’t infidelity or a mid-life crisis, but the length and number of the marriage.

Gray divorce doesnt mean spending the rest of your life alone

The numbers on divorce suggest that you’re 2.5 times more likely to have a divorce if you’ve already remarried at some point in your life. You’re also 10 times more likely to divorce if you’ve been married to your spouse for less than 10 years compared to someone married to the same person for 40 years.

Things like resentment can undermine decades-long marriages over one spouse’s life decision or simply becoming tired of pretending to have a connection with someone whom they’ve spent years building a life with. People over age 50 can often find renewed happiness in life after the end of an unsatisfactory marriage and even find love again.

Divorce can represent a new chapter

Like many people, more couples over age 50 are realizing that life is too short to spend with a relationship that doesn’t enhance your life. While divorce can be difficult in the short term, many older divorcees eventually find a happiness they thought was gone afterward.
